Lucrezia de’ Medici JournalNCMA-Branded Items
Lucrezia de’ Medici was the daughter of Cosimo de’ Medici, the famed Grand Duke of Tuscany. Born in 1545, Lucrezia sat for the portrait featured here in the year before her untimely death at age 17. This haunting likeness, as well as her unhappy arranged marriage to Alfonso II, the fifth Duke of Ferrara, inspired Robert Browning to write his 1842 poem “My Last Duchess.” Lucrezia’s portrait now hangs in the NCMA’s European Gallery as part of our permanent collection, and her connection to “My Last Duchess” is recognized in this custom hard-cover journal.
